When trying to make money online, many of us are prone to “fallacies of logic.” As it relates to success – succumbing to fallacies of logic is quite common. Though not necessarily a negative thing, we need to recognize and weed out the good from the bad when making decisions based upon conclusions that we draw.
Alright, I’m not going to get too complicated here – so let’s just look at some examples and how they can affect you.
What exactly is a fallacy of logic?
A fallacy of logic is a conclusion drawn, that is based upon facts or statements that are irrelevant or flawed in their thinking. The Nizkor Project gives a couple great examples of fallacies of logic:
Bill: “I believe that abortion is morally wrong.”
Dave: “Of course you would say that, you’re a priest.”
Bill: “What about the arguments I gave to support my position?”
Dave: “Those don’t count. Like I said, you’re a priest, so you have to say that abortion is wrong. Further, you are just a lackey to the Pope, so I can’t believe what you say.”
And one more example:
Bill: “I think that some people have psychic powers.”
Jill: “What is your proof?”
Bill: “No one has been able to prove that people do not have psychic powers.”
What does this have to do with success and making money online?
Many times I hear people make assumptions and come to conclusions about making money online based upon facts or statements that are inaccurate. Some fallacies in logic when it comes to making money online:
- The most popular websites have short domain names – so mine needs to be short
- The most popular websites don’t have dashes – so mine shouldn’t have a dash
- A product is successful because of its low price – so mine should be priced low
As you can see, these are just a few conclusions that many people arrive at when drawing conclusions. However, they’re inaccurate because they are just one piece of the puzzle and may actually have no impact on your ability to succeed or make money.
The biggest thing I wanted to get across, is that just because someone is doing something one way – does not mean that is the only way to succeed.
