Unless you’re a news organization that is constantly pumping out new content each day about the latest stories, many of us will want to create as much timeless content as possible. Timeless content is articles that can be referenced for many months (or even years) to come. It allows you to do less work because you’re not needing to continually create fresh articles or posts to keep and attract readers. Over a period of time, these “timeless” articles will gain links, get referenced, and build a strong position in your field or topic.
One of the easiest ways to make your content have a lifespan of more than just a few months (even if you report on the news) is to remove the date and time stamps from your content. With WordPress and many other publishing platforms – often the date and time are automatically stamped onto your post. With no time or date to reference, your visitors can view your content without thinking that your site is outdated. Many times, content that we created years ago is still very applicable today.
I have found much success with time stamps on and off, sometimes it helps to show the time and date because it gives your visitors an indication that you’re articles/content is fresh and up-to-date. However, when I am creating content with the intention of it being referenced – I will often remove the timestamp.
While there are pros and cons to removing the time stamp, I suggest you try it out and see what types of results you get as you can always turn it back on if you think it helps.
